When Masks Review: Mini Spa Sessions!

‘Korean Beauty‘ and ‘Sheet Masks‘ are words we cannot ignore in the beauty blogging world right now. Everyone is obsessed with K beauty and I have seen such a shift in the offerings of masks in both drugstores and stores such as Ulta and Sephora. Although traditional masks are still around, sheet masks are becoming so popular! They are single use, usually made of some light fabric, and contain essence that soaks into your skin during wear-time. They don’t require rinsing after like traditional masks, making them a really easy, travel-friendly option.

I was introduced to When masks through Brandbacker, and I have been able to try two masks from their line, ‘The Last Choice’ and ‘Glamour Base’, which both retail for $7. I have seen them at both Ulta and Sephora and you can even get them through Birchbox and Anthropologie online, and at Ricky’s NYC.

Now, the thing that piqued my interest about When is their bio-cellulose sheet for the mask. It is made from coconuts and is apparently gentle enough for burn patients, which increases my confidence in the brand quite a bit because I tend to have sensitive skin. The bio-cellulose masks hold ten times more essence than the traditional paper/fabric sheet you may be familiar with. Also good to note–these are vegan and gluten free and formulated without Parabens, Sulfates, and Phthalates.

The Last Choice

‘The Last Choice’ masks was the first one I tried. Upon opening the masks, I noticed the texture of the sheet immediately. It kind of clumps up on itself and has a very jelly-like texture and also feels quite sturdier than regular sheet masks. Although it sticks onto itself, it was easy to get onto my face and that adhesion meant that I could pretty much do anything with this mask on without fear of it slipping off. It also held the essence well against my skin, so I didn’t feel like anything was dripping. 

‘The Last Choice’ smelled a bit medicinal to me, but not offensive. It wasn’t my favorite smell, but the mask fit my face fairly well. Although this particular mask is meant to hydrate with coconut juice and hyaluronic acid, I felt more of a firming effect during wear and after I removed the mask. I felt it, but didn’t see much of a difference until I woke up the next morning. My face felt so plump and my dark spots were significantly lightened. This didn’t seem to last more than a day or so, but maybe with long term use, there could be benefit there! 

Glamour Base

This mask is meant to smooth and prep skin, again with a base of coconut juice and added peptides and collagen. Out of the two masks, I actually found this one to be the more hydrating one! ‘Glamour Base’ has a slight lemon-lime scent and plumped and smoothed my skin beautifully before I got ready for a date. I adore this one and I can see myself keeping a stash on hand for important events!

I am really impressed with When masks. I’ve never felt sheet masks to do much for me other than provide a little spa-like experience, but because the bio-cellulose sticks so well to the skin, I really think the essence of When masks absorbs better and I can actually see a glow. I love that they are gentle and dermatologist tested as well.

Above you can see the thin, jelly-like consistency of the sheet on my skin. Not a perfect fit but it sticks so well!
